How Single-Pair Ethernet (SPE) Changed the Game for IIoT
The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), also known as the Industrial Internet or Industry 4.0, is an extension of IoT in industrial sectors and applications. By adopting machine-to-machine (M2M) communication, big data, and machine learning, the IIoT is a game changer in the manufacturing process, enabling businesses to have better efficiency and transforming how operations are carried out.
The first Ethernet standard was adopted in IIoT back in 1980, allowing excellent communication efficiency between devices in its era. However, as technologies such as M2M, artificial intelligence, advanced robotics, mobile devices, cloud computing, and RFID are arising, limitations of conventional Ethernet started to emerge.
Luckily, Single-Pair Ethernet (SPE)’s appearance has changed the situation. With only one pair of twisted copper wires transmitting signaling and power, SPE delivers better performance than traditional 4-pair cabling Ethernet standards.
Faster Data Transmission Speed
SPE transmits data at speeds of 10Mbit/s up to 1 GBit/s with a single pair of wires. Previously, this required two pairs for Fast Ethernet (100MB) and four pairs for Gigabit Ethernet.
Longer Distance & Wider Coverage
SPE carries data and power within 1km with less networking equipment needed. This makes SPE a perfect choice for IIoT implementations over large factory or industrial sites.
Lighter, Cheaper, Ease of Installation
The greatest benefit of SPE lies in its significant reduction in cable weight and diameter. While it only takes a quarter of the overall physical cable (one pair instead of four-pair), manufacturing and installation cost naturally drops compared to the previous system. While SPE is designed to replace conventional Ethernet, SPE is perfectly compatible with the terminal block-style connections found in most industrial applications.
Whether in the automotive sector or IIoT, SPE has proven its strength and brought positive impacts to the industries. With the strong partnership and close collaboration of the SPE Industrial Partner Network, we can expect SPE technology to evolve further and bring new benefits in the future.
Nextron SPE Solutions
As an expert in connection solutions, Nextron has a complete collection of SPE connectors. Aside from standard 2 way SPE, Nextron also provide modularized and customized solution of multiple SPE connectors combination. 4-way SPE is also available for higher power demand above the 1.36A (50V) threshold.
All Nextron’s SPE products are developed under IEEE802.3bp (1000BASE-T1) standard and meet IP 67 when mated. The product comes with multiple locking mechanisms (bayonet, push-pull, and screw) and are available for customization.
